"Nature in the City" – an initiative changing the perspective on climate change through practical workshops in schools.
In November 2023, the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Project Management Agency, and Tech Zity organized the hackathon "Teach4Climate: Lessons on Climate Change." The hackathon aimed to find the best solutions for improving students' competencies in climate change topics, while appropriately considering social-civic activities, formal education, and leisure opportunities.
The team that won first place presented an idea to create an informal education program, "Nature in the City," designed to address climate change challenges through food chains. The idea of expanding green spaces near schools, where students could practically explore the theoretical knowledge they learn in school about climate change and develop the competencies needed for future leaders, left a strong impression on the hackathon's jury. The organizers allocated funding to implement this idea.
With the support of the Environmental Project Management Agency, the "Nature in the City" program was launched, where raised garden beds created in the shade of trees in the outdoor classroom allow students to deepen their knowledge of climate change, food webs, and biodiversity.
Learn more about the program’s impact on youth, who often don't consider where their food comes from, and how creatively teachers manage to convey the topic of climate change – in the latest episode of "Green Talks" (link in the comments).
