Climate, Rainfall, and Extreme Weather in Lithuania – 2024
2024 was the warmest year on record in Lithuania’s meteorological history. Every month, except January, exceeded the long-term average (1991–2020). February, March, April, May, and September ranked among the five warmest months since 1961.
Over the past decade, Lithuania has experienced five of its hottest years on record (2015, 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024). As climate change accelerates, temperature records are being broken almost annually. Last year was no exception, with 18 daily maximum temperature records shattered and two others matched.
Precipitation levels in 2024 were, on average, 10% lower than the long-term norm, with significant regional variations.
Lithuania also saw an increase in extreme weather, recording 18 severe meteorological events, two classified as catastrophic, along with 12 extreme hydrological events.
